Stand With Parkland Calls On DeSantis, Gillum To Defend Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act

Today, Stand with Parkland – The National Association of Families for Safe Schools is calling on Florida gubernatorial candidates Ron DeSantis and Andrew Gillum to state publicly their support for the “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act,” landmark legislation signed into law that protects the lives of students and staff members in Florida’s schools. Following is an official statement from the families of the 17 victims in the Parkland shooting.

“In the aftermath of the massacre that left 14 innocent students and 3 brave staff members dead, and 17 other students wounded at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, the Florida legislature came together to pass landmark legislation in SB 7026. Governor Scott signed the bill into law as the “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act” on March 9th.

“The “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act” law is an important first step toward protecting the lives of students and staff members alike by addressing school safety using a holistic approach that covers campus physical security, instituting better mental health programs, and implementing changes to the state’s firearms laws. Most importantly, the new law was crafted with bipartisan support.

“We are calling on gubernatorial candidates Ron DeSantis and Andrew Gillum to state publicly their support for this landmark legislation and promise the voters of the State of Florida that they will vigorously defend the “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act” and all its provisions.

“The lives and safety of our students and teachers should not be a partisan issue. We all need to come together to solve the problem of violence in our schools.”
