Stand with Parkland/Official Press Release

(Parkland, FL) – February 14, 2023 – Today, on the 5-year anniversary of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the 118th Congress reintroduced the EAGLES Act. Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL-26) will lead the reintroduction of this bipartisan bill, named after the mascot at Stoneman Douglas High School, with co-sponsor Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23).

This piece of legislation would reauthorize the National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) within the U.S. Secret Service and expand NTAC to include the establishment of a national program on targeted school violence prevention.

Stand with Parkland and families of the victims of the shooting continue to advocate for comprehensive school safety legislation as there has been an increased support to help protect America’s students and teachers following shootings in Uvalde, Oxford, and most recently Michigan.

“We are incredibly grateful to Rep. Diaz-Balart and Rep. Moskowitz for their unwavering commitment to making our schools safer,” said President of Stand with Parkland and Father of Gina Rose, Tony Montalto. “The reintroduction of the EAGLE Act brings us one step closer to ensuring that no parent ever has to experience the heartbreak of losing a child to senseless violence. We stand with them in this critical effort to protect our students and communities.”

The EAGLES Act will:

Bolster the National Threat Assessment Center studies on targeted violence and the development of best practices and training to identify and manage threats before they result in violence.
Establish a Safe School Initiative, a national program on school violence prevention that will include expanded research on school violence.
Allow the Secret Service to provide communities and schools with training and best practices on how to recognize and prevent school violence.
